Our story
Format Health grew out of a close collaboration with the University of Washington, drawing on the UW School of Medicine, UW Medical Center, and Harborview Medical Center’s deep clinical expertise. Seattle/King County—birthplace of the Medic One program and a global leader in cardiac-arrest outcomes—was the ideal home for our work. Founded in 2016 by Brian K. Ross, MD, PhD (now professor emeritus of Anesthesiology at UW), we set out to replace error-prone paper charting during “Code Blue” events with a purpose-built digital tool. Dr. Ross brought decades of experience in medical simulation and device innovation, including founding one of the nation’s early simulation centers and chairing UW’s Code Blue Committee.
What we built
RevitalPro is a tablet-based system that replaces manual code documentation with fast, guided, bedside capture—created with input from physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, risk management, and quality leaders.
Key capabilities
Rapid, intuitive entry of critical event data
Point-of-care guidance, safety alerts, and timers aligned with Advanced Life Support (ALS) guidelines
Secure, HIPAA-compliant transmission and storage for auditing, quality improvement, and research
Designed by providers, for providers, Format Health improves data integrity, team coordination, and—most importantly—patient outcomes in one of healthcare’s most demanding environments.
Dr. Brian K. Ross is a Seattle-based physician–scientist recognized for advancing both clinical care and academic medicine. With dual degrees in medicine and a PhD in physiology and pharmacology, he bridges bedside practice with research-driven innovation.
A long-time faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington, Dr. Ross served as residency program director for over 20 years. He founded one of the nation’s early medical simulation centers and led the five-state WWAMI simulation initiative (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), expanding access to high-impact training across the region. His scholarship includes peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters spanning anesthesiology, in-hospital cardiac arrest management, and simulation-based education.
Dr. Ross is a strong advocate for high- and low-fidelity simulation in both training and continuing education. Following retirement from full-time academia, he continues to serve as Co-CEO and Chief Medical Officer at Format Health and volunteers as a mentor and preceptor at free health fairs and clinics throughout greater Seattle and King County—supporting medical, nursing, and pharmacy students as they care for underserved communities.
